God So Loved the World: performed by Eunsook Park Prayer Celtic Prayer Around the fire, May the Sacred Three, Save, Shield, Surround the hearth, The house, The household, This eve, This night, Oh! This eve, This night, And every night, Every single night, Amen On Wednesday evenings, during Lent, St. Barts is having a Lenten Celtic service at 5:30pm. You can attend in person or live stream. The sanctuary is organized in a circle for this service, further reflecting the Celtic belief in the encircling love and protection of the Holy Trinity. It also invites us to consider a life without hierarchy and faith as a journey with no end. You can also try saying the Celtic prayer above while family members hold hands, creating that same symbolic circle of love and protection. Bible Reading Luke 13:31-35 13 Some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." He said to them, "Go and tell that fox for me, 'Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.' Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'" Mindful Minutes

Lent Song: Lyrics by Alexandra Montano to the melody of Frere Jacques. Arranged by Sha Armstrong Bible Reading Luke 4:1-13 After his baptism, Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'" Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'" Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. Mindful Minutes

The Beatitudes- ~ The Heart of Jesus Prayer For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, For health and food, For love and friends, For everything thy goodness sends. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson Bible Reading- The Beatitudes Luke 6: 17-28 17 Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. 18They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. 20 Then he looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich,| for you have received your consolation. 25Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. Mindful Minutes

All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' And you will say, 'Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.'" And he said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian." When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. Mindful Minutes

The Wedding at Cana—Jesus turns water to wine
Themes:
Joyous Beginnings: Grab your Faith kit votive or light a candle and enjoy! Miracle Worker, performed by Sing-in Seeds Prayer For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, For health and food, For love and friends, For everything Thy goodness sends. --Ralph Waldo Emerson Bible Reading: The Wedding at Cana John 2: 1-3, 6-11 On the third day, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 6Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to them “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. 9When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10and said to him, “everyone serves the good wine first, but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. What do you think? This section below is meant to be a jumping off point to chat more deeply with your children about what this reading means to them.
Current Connections On January 17th we celebrate and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was a civil rights leader in our country who spoke up about how African-Americans were treated poorly as compared to white people, just because of the color of their skin. For example, African-American children could not go to the same schools as white children, African-Americans could not even go to the same restaurants as white people or work in the same places, alongside white people. He had a vision about how people could help make our country a fairer place, a more loving place: “Where people are not judged by the color or their skin but by the content of their character.” Dr. King inspired many people through peaceful protest to dream of this better world and to work toward racial equality and creation of laws to protect the rights of all people, regardless of their skin color. “Love is the greatest force in the universe. It is the heartbeat of the moral cosmos. He who loves is a participant in the being of God.” --Martin Luther King, Jr. Activity
